The Christmas Cheer & The Writing Blues

I was dreading Christmas this year. I don't mind all the other holidays, but Christmas usually sucks. Maybe it's because now I'm older the excitement of waking up Christmas morning has gone. Maybe it's because the last few years have been icy and slushy and very, very cold. This year, however, I really had a good time. I spent it with my family and it was really good - no arguments, no stress, just a bunch of us enjoying good food and champagne. :o)

But now the thrill of Christmas is over and the New Year is looming, I'm trying to get back into my wip and its so much harder than I thought it would be. I've read so many amazing books over the holidays, all Christmas stories and all of which were amazing. I feel my story is paling in comparison and its making it harder to get back into writing. Hopefully after the New Year, I'll find my muse but for now, I'm not going to worry too much about it and enjoy the rest of the holidays.

Hope the holidays are going well for you all!

So You Think You Can Write?

I sure hope so...

I've been fiddling with this story all week, debating on whether or not to enter. Truth is, the core conflict and setting are both 'outside the box' compared to other stories I've read, but I've tried to keep some things similar and ended up deciding 'what the hell'. I'm never going to know if I don't try right?

Has anyone else entered this year? I heard on Twitter a large number of the entries are Presents, which I think my story suits best (if at all). Now I'm nervous...

Cutie Pie

I was visiting my friend today and her new puppy. He was so gorgeous I just had to share him with everyone. She's called him Shem and he totally suits it. Definitely the man of their house.
Also great inspiration for a new heroin who's into cute little dogs about the length of a sky remote. I'm thinking someone with drama queen tendencies but with a heart of gold. Now I'm away to dream up the hero :o)

NaNoWriMo - Finnished!

I completed the first draft of my ms yesterday (which included the first round of edits) bringing my total word count to 49,275. Bit disappointed that I've fallen short but over the last week I've deleted lots of words and added even more so I think I've probably written over 50k overall.

Now on to the polishing once my CP's looked it over. I already sent her the first three chapters. She emailed me Saturday saying she loved it and that it was my best work yet. Super happy about that :o)

Pantsing v Plotting

Up until recently, I considered myself a pantser. I'd get an idea, either about the characters I want, a setting, the black moment or even just the opening line of a story and I'd be able to sit down and type away, only really planning out a few scenes ahead. This worked for one or two wips and I did enjoy writing this way although it was hard at times.

For NanoWriMo, I spent ages in October plotting out a detailed outline of where I want my story to go, creating characters right down to their quirks and bad habits and outlining the character curves, conflicts and anything else I could think of. I'm actually finding writing this way heaps easier than pantsing although that did work for me to.

What do you do, are you a plotter, pantser or a bit of both?

The plague...

that is self doubt.

Seriously, why do we do it? Why spend hundreds of hours slogging over something that you know will be 'the one' then spend even more hours making it 'so perfect you just know that it is the one?'

Then, after it's as shiny as a brass door knob, you submit it thinking that will be the end of it. You can now go on to write something knew and completely forget about the work you submitted, right?

I worked and reworked my entry for New Voices, trying to make it unpredictable, trying to take my CP partner's views on it and, gaining approval from her, subbed it to the London office.

And I thought it would be all over after that. I am sooo naive. Why couldn't I see all those excellent ways I could have improved it before? It's madness.

Even though I have my project for NaNoWriMo to 'take my mind off things' it's still not enough. Am I going to be a nervous wreck, refreshing my inbox several times a day for the next six months or does it get easier?

All views would be appreciated. It's not my first time subbing somewhere, but I'm beginning to realise that doesn't matter. My mind still plagues itself with doubt each and every time and I wonder if those who make it still feel that way.

NaNoWriMo & A lil bit about NV

First of all, I want to say well done to those who made it to the Top Four in New Voices 2011. You all have amazing stories and I loved every one. It was so hard to pick between my top two faves, The Seven Day Target and Beguiling The Enemy. Both were very different, but I enjoyed them immensely. In the end, I only get one vote and The Seven Day Target done it for me. Well done girls, you all are winners in my book!

Now on to Nano, I've managed just over 3k today. A personal best for me and I hope to do the same Thursday since I have to work late Wednesday and Friday. I hate having to lose two days when I really want to make my 50k target. I'll just have to make up for it at the weekend. How's everyone else getting on? Are you writing a new story or finishing up an old one?

My username on Nano is 'aimeexdx'. Come add me as a writing buddy :o)

The happy week

I've had an awful few weeks. First a burst pipe meant no water to my flat, then I crashed my car into an undercover police car! This week, thankfully, has been so much better.

First off, five of my eharl pals got through to the top 21 in New Voices! Mega excited for you guys and I've already voted and read you all. Unfortunately, I keep getting knocked out when I try to post but it worked on Ami's. I've no idea how to fix it so I can tell you my thoughts on the rest but hopefully you'll all make it to the top few, I'm hoping they change it to top five :o)

Today has been brill too. I've got a new car (the same make and year as my old one with a cd player which I didn't have before)!

Plus...Vampire diaries started this week in the UK (I'm easily pleased, I know) but seriously, to me, all this equates to a good week :o)

Keeping Track

I need to catch up reading entries and, rather than hunt them down over Eharl over the weekend I thought I'd put the list here. That way I can work through them at my leisure and anyone else that wants to have a look can find some brilliant entries easily :-) Some of them are my favourites so far.

And if you want to read mine, just click the New Voices button at the right. Just want to say thanks again to Lacey Devlin, the best button maker ever :o)

If I've missed anyone just leave me a comment and I'll edit them up.

Thought I'd add my fave song of the moment. Yum.

Rose Bombing & Sexy Vamps

There has been lots of heartache from New Voices over on Eharl of late and most of it's due to certain peeps lowering the rose rating anonymously (without leaving a comment to say why they didn't like the story). It's happened to me but I'm pretty thick skinned though I can understand why some folks would be disheartened by it.

What I'd suggest is to read your comments, they are what matter. Most of the readers this year have been lovely and I've already had lots of useful pointers to help better my writing. Considering the entry I posted was my first (serious) attempt at writing, I am not expecting to get through but I am hoping for advice on how to improve.

And now for the best bit :o)

The winter's almost upon us. Already we are seeing more rain here than sunshine and it's dark when I'm going to work but, the best part about the winter...Vampire Diaries and True Blood will be starting here soon. Both of which mean a winter of swoon worthy men, my favourite vamps being Damon & Eric. Yum!

Which of these gets your blood pumping? I'm torn, can't I have them both? ;o)

Entry Submitted!

I have now officially submitted my entry, The Isle of Sensuality, into the New Voices competition.

You can check it out by clicking the heart on the right.

Would love to hear what you think.

Now I'm off to try and edit the rest, just in case ;)

New Voices 2011

I'm super excited about entering New Voices this year and up until last week I had my first chapter all polished and ready to go. On Saturday, an old idea I had resurfaced with a vengeance with a whole new set of conflicts and emotional scenes which I struggled to ignore.

Eager to jot down as much of this story as I could, I wrote a full six page outline. The story still pushed for release though so I had to sit down and write the first two chapters before the edge wore off. Unfortunately, I like this story much better and fits the line I'm aiming it at almost perfectly. But here I am, one almost polished ms of a story with characters I adore and another new overpowering idea simmering away in my subconscious, screaming at me to write it. So what do I do? Play it safe with my first ms or take a chance on this new, exciting and emotionally complex story that I may not have the talent to show to its fullest?

Decisions, decisions.

Ah the dreaded R

Well I've just received my first form R from Nocturne Cravings and, even though I knew myself the story wasn't very strong, it still sucks bad.  Although on a more positive note, I have realised that my talents definately do not lie in paranormal romances and I have abandoned those ideas completely.

I have now completed a first draft which I'm aiming at Mills & Boon and am halfway through the first draft of the second book in the series.  I'm feeling much more positive about these although I know my first draft needs a lot of revisals before its anywhere near ready for submitting :).  Hopefully, I'll have it ready for September to enter into the New Voices 2011 competition.  Well I best stop the blogging and get back to work if I hope to finish the first draft of the second in the next fortnight.  Eek!

The waiting game

Does anyone else feel antsy after waiting so long to hear back on submissions?  Yes it's only been a month and I've heard that no news is good news but I can't help wondering, what with others talking about receiving responses after a mere week that my work can't be all that good.

Anyone else fancie sharing their experiences with submissions?

Saturday, 11 June 2011

After spending four days reading over the first three chapters of a partial ms and a synopsis for Mills and Boon I'm finally ready to submit.  Really need to work up some courage though, a 25,000 word novella is completely different to write than a 50,000 novel but I'm almost half way through and still have loads to write.  Hopefully will get it off tomorrow, keep your fingers crossed for me please :)
